Crypto airdrops are a marketing tactic employed by blockchain projects to distribute free tokens or coins to holders of a particular cryptocurrency. The term “airdrop” comes from the idea of “dropping” these tokens into the wallets of existing cryptocurrency holders, typically as a way to incentivize adoption, reward loyal users, or promote a new project.

Airdrops can take various forms:

  1. User Airdrops: These are distributed directly to individuals who meet certain criteria, such as holding a specific amount of a particular cryptocurrency or fulfilling certain tasks like joining a Telegram group or following a project on social media.
  2. Holder Airdrops: These are distributed based on the amount of a specific cryptocurrency held in a wallet. For example, holders of Ethereum might receive free tokens from a new project launching on the Ethereum blockchain.
  3. Snapshot Airdrops: In a snapshot airdrop, the blockchain takes a snapshot of all wallet addresses at a particular block height, and tokens are then distributed based on the holdings at that moment.
  4. Fork Airdrops: Sometimes, when a cryptocurrency undergoes a hard fork, resulting in the creation of a new blockchain and cryptocurrency, holders of the original cryptocurrency receive an equivalent amount of the new cryptocurrency.
